Where it comes from.

Flanders, and the water that made the fibre

Belgian linen owes its reputation to geography. Flax grown in the Lys river valley of Flanders was retted in the river itself, whose soft, slow-moving water broke down the woody stalk without attacking the fibre — producing thread finer and more even than flax processed in harder water. The technique is centuries old, and the name still functions as a quality marker rather than a brand.

The slipcovered linen sectional is a much more recent look. It belongs to the late twentieth-century Belgian interior sensibility associated with designers such as Axel Vervoordt, who built rooms around undyed, unfussed natural material and let texture do the work that pattern and colour do elsewhere. Washed linen is central to that idea, and it is deliberately not crisp: it creases, softens and pales with use, and the design treats all three as the point rather than as a defect.

That is why the archetype is almost always loose-covered. Tight upholstery fights the material; a slipcover lets it move.
