Contemporary Italian, and the difficulty of white

Contemporary Italian luxury seating condenses several decades of refinement into volumes that look inevitable — the hardest thing for a designer to achieve and the easiest for a viewer to overlook.

White leather makes the difficulty explicit. There is no colour, pattern or texture to absorb an imperfection, so every seam, every foam edge and every variation in hide thickness is visible under ordinary light. A white high-back lounge chair is effectively a test of the workshop that built it.

There is a material consideration as well. White leathers are almost always pigmented rather than aniline-dyed, because an aniline finish would show every mark in the hide. Pigmented leather resists staining and light better, which is practical, but it develops less patina — it stays close to how it looked when new instead of changing. That is a genuine trade-off rather than a compromise, and for this typology it is the right side of it.
