Where it comes from.

Full-grain, and what twenty years does to it

Leather is graded by how much of the hide's original surface survives processing. Full-grain retains the outermost layer, including the natural grain and whatever marks the animal acquired. Top-grain has that layer sanded away and an artificial grain embossed in its place, which buys uniformity at the cost of durability and of the ability to develop a patina.

The distinction matters most on a piece you keep. Full-grain leather does not wear evenly: it burnishes where hands and bodies touch it, darkens with oils, and softens along fold lines, so that after a decade the surface is a record of use. Corrected-grain leather tends instead to crack or delaminate at those same points, because the finish is a coating rather than the material itself.

On a headboard that is the entire argument. It is a large, flat, well-lit surface, touched constantly and replaced rarely — precisely the conditions under which the difference between the two becomes impossible to miss.
