Where it comes from.

Italian postmodernism, and wit returning to the chair

Postwar Italian design ran on rationalism: form justified by function, ornament treated as a failure of nerve. By the late 1970s a younger generation in Milan had begun arguing that the position had itself become a style, and that a chair could carry humour, reference and personality without becoming dishonest.

The curve-back chair belongs to that shift. The back is not curved because ergonomics demanded a particular radius; it is curved because the sweep gives the object character seen from behind — the view a chair most often presents in a real room. It is a decision about presence rather than performance.

Practically, the form suits conversation seating. A pronounced curved back encloses the sitter slightly and turns a pair of chairs into a defined zone rather than two separate seats. That works in a large room and can feel cramped in a small one, which is a question of scale rather than taste.
