Where it comes from.

The dressing room, and furniture without a back

The backless upholstered stool is a specific answer to a specific room. A dressing table needs a seat you approach from any angle, occupy briefly, and push away without turning around — all things a chair with a back does badly.

Hollywood interiors of the 1930s and 1940s made the round tufted version an archetype, pairing it with vanity mirrors and dressing-room lighting. The tufting is not purely decorative: buttoning holds stuffing in place on a round seat that has no frame edges to anchor it, and without it the padding migrates toward the rim.

Its usefulness now is mostly about flexibility. A backless stool has no front, so it does not need to face anything, and it reads visually as a far smaller object than a chair of the same footprint. In a tight room that difference is the whole reason to choose one.
