Where it comes from.

One foot, one stem, one disc

The pedestal table exists to solve a specific problem: chair legs and human legs colliding with table legs. A single central support removes the conflict entirely, which is why the form recurs across centuries of furniture.

Its modern statement came from Eero Saarinen, whose Tulip series for Knoll (1955–1957) was an explicit attempt to clear what he called the slum of legs beneath tables and chairs. Saarinen wanted the whole piece cast in one material; the technology of the day could not achieve the required strength in plastic, so the base was made in aluminium and finished to match. The compromise is visible if you look for it, and it bothered him.

At side-table scale the engineering inverts. A small disc on a narrow stem tips easily, so the base has to carry disproportionate weight — one reason stone suits the form. A marble base is doing structural work, not only decorative work, and its mass is why the table stays upright.
