Where it comes from.

Belgian restraint, with the temperature raised

Belgian modernism occupies an unusual position: as reduced as Scandinavian design in its forms, but considerably warmer in its materials. Where Nordic work reaches for pale wood and light, Belgian interiors tend toward deeper, greyed colour, heavier textiles and a darker overall register.

Olive sits precisely in that territory. It is a green desaturated far enough toward brown to behave as a neutral — it will sit beside oak, walnut, linen, stone and black metal without arguing with any of them — while remaining unmistakably a colour.

Velvet complicates it usefully. The pile catches light directionally, so a single olive velvet chair shows several values of the same colour at once depending on where you stand. That is why the combination reads rich rather than flat, and also why the direction of the pile is a decision made at the point of upholstering rather than an afterthought.
