Where it comes from.

1960s confidence, in a single seat

By the mid-1960s furniture had stopped apologising for taking up space. Postwar austerity had passed, synthetic foams allowed large soft volumes without a heavy frame, and colour moved decisively away from the muted palettes of the previous decade.

Mustard, ochre, burnt orange and avocado belong to that moment specifically. They are neither primary colours nor neutrals but saturated earth tones — warm enough to sit beside teak and walnut without clashing, strong enough to carry a room on their own.

An oversized single chair in that palette is doing a particular job. It is not part of a set and is not meant to be repeated; it anchors a corner and gives the eye somewhere to land. The underlying logic is that one large confident object reads calmer than several small competing ones — counterintuitive, but generally true in a room where a sofa is already handling the practical work.
