Where it comes from.

Hotel lobbies, and furniture that organises a room

The long upholstered bench was a fixture of the grand lobbies and foyers of the 1920s and 1930s, where it did something a chair cannot: it provided seating without imposing a direction. People sit on a bench facing whichever way the room requires, and the object itself stays visually low and quiet.

Channel tufting appears on these pieces for structural reasons as much as visual ones. A long unbroken upholstered surface sags in the middle over time; dividing it into stitched channels distributes the stress and keeps the top plane flat for decades rather than years.

In a domestic room the same properties hold. A bench at the foot of a bed, along a hallway, or beneath a window works because it reads as architecture rather than as another seat competing with the sofa. Black velvet exaggerates the effect — the pile absorbs light, so the object recedes and the channels register as shadow lines rather than as decoration.
