Where it comes from.

Art Deco geometry, brought into the bedroom

Art Deco's defining move was to take ornament and make it geometric: repeated verticals, stepped forms, and symmetry replacing the organic curves of Art Nouveau before it. Applied to upholstery, that produced the channelled panel — a large surface divided into regular stitched columns.

On a headboard the effect is dimensional. Vertical channels draw the eye upward and make a bedroom wall read taller, which is useful at standard ceiling height. The channels also generate their own shadow, so the piece has depth under almost any lighting rather than needing a lamp aimed at it.

Velvet is the traditional material because its pile responds to the geometry: each channel catches light along its crown and falls into shadow at the seam, so the pattern stays legible from across the room. The practical variables are channel width and overall height, and both are decisions about the wall the piece will sit against rather than about the piece itself.
